Three of the four 5-minute films have been shot now, only one more to go. Not enough time to tell anecdotes, so here are some photo impressions.

Happy days are here again August 7, 2007

After two and a halve months we are (finally) about to shoot some films again. The past period we spent several weeks doing post-production for our 2 minute films, followed by a couple of weeks of selecting our 5 minute screenplays and crews, and the last few weeks doing pre-production for these films.

Today we start with the first of four film shoots. Each shoot lasts three days, plus one day before and after to get all the equipment ready and on location. On many levels we will be putting new things into practice the coming three weeks. It is the first time we make a film based on something we wrote and developed ourselves; we shoot on location; we use tracks and the dolly; we will be using radio microphones; we have the biggest crew so far (12 people excl. cast); each film consists of a multiple day shoot; we do all the logistics of organizing the production ourselves.

Very exciting stuff! It will be very exhausting as well because we will be making days of 10+ hours, starting early (getting up around 6:00 for most people) and ending late (home around 21:00 again?). Specific point of attention for me: food! Fellow students sometimes mock me because I tend to eat a lot, all throughout the day. I just can’t live on an early breakfast, lunch at one o’clock and dinner at nine in the evening. Preparing for the film shoots for me means, amongst other things, making sure that I bring enough food of my own that I can eat quickly during the day, such as fruit, muesli bars, yoghurt, sandwiches and smoothies. Note the use of “and”, not “or” :-)

My roles on the four shoots:
#1 – focus puller  (and writer of the script!)
#2 – editor – this is a post-production role, so in this case I’ll be filming “making of” material and making still photographs
#3 – producer
#4 – continuity / script supervisor

Wish me luck, and loads of fun!
